Graphic Design Poster Competition
Veerle started a competition last week with the goal to sum up what you thought graphic design is all about.
I started off enjoying looking through the Flickr pool for the submissions until at the week end whilst sitting with young Oscar I had a quick idea, the result was not really graphic design per say but it was creative.

Then sitting there the other evening I thought more about what I thought graphic design is all about.
Graphic design can take on a lot of elements from typography to colour schemes, but because I do not know my kern from my glyph I had to think deeper.
To which got me to thinking about the graphic in graphic design.
But what does make a good design?
When it suddenly hit, the best designs are the ones that are instantly recognizable, designs that can work across countries and break language barriers without any need for an explanation or description.
To which in my view graphic design is the ability to create something that lasts longer than the initial viewing, a design that can speak without saying and is understood by all viewing it.

White

There is something to be said for trying new ideas and keeping everything fresh.
But there is also something to be said for actually sitting down and finishing something off; something like a WordPress theme.
Exit the Black theme, enter the White version. OK so naming stuff was never really my strong point.
I got a bit tired of a dark site, for most it really works for me I wanted something lighter. I guess the dark nights are calling for a lighter treat for the eyes.
Yes as before when God spares me a few minutes on my own I’ll know it into a release; so how many is that now, I’m 0 for 4!
No CommentsDark, almost black

It is a little bit later than planed but here is the new theme/style for shibbyonline.
Code named Black it is the first theme I have created using a dark background, those of you who have followed my themes and designed will know that it is mainly light colours that float my boat.
There are still little bugs to work out and I’m in the process of writing new archive and about pages but hopefully once completed it might make it’s way to a release.
4 CommentsDid you reboot?

Today is the Autumn reboot. Sites from around the world will release there new look, hopefully completely standard compliant, with a view to gain interest and a better view of their sites.
I’m gutted that this time around I have just not had the time to take part. I had every intention to have another go at the reboot but due to work load and changes in job I’ve been totally snowed under; well I’m still sporting the Pink for October theme.
The whole reboot scheme has actually changed since the Spring version and to be honest it does not appear to have that same level of input and respect of previous incarnations; to demonstrate long standing reboot successor Matt Brett is not on the list, in fact none of the big names in standards and designs appear to be there. That said congratulations to every one that took part.

I've read the books, tried the examples and tested little known gems of CSS but then you read something that makes you sit there and realise that no matter what you do you have only scratched the surface. Molly Holzschlag teaches us about another one of those lesser used CSS rules; ...
