Everything About Me & This Site

This is the customary ‘About’ page.
Basically this is were I drivel on about me and all the stuff I’ve done and try and convince you that if you met me in the street you would instantly take a shine to my cheeky manor.

OK maybe not but you can at least find out a bit about what makes me tick and why I write what I do or blog about the things that I have done.

About Me

AdamI’m Adam Chamberlin; I was gracefully brought into this world ass first in the late seventies. Since then quite a bit of stuff has happened, some of it interesting like the birth of Mtv, some not so interesting like my 25metre face down swimming certificate. I’ll try and fill you in on the not so interesting stuff:

I grow up with my parents who at the time were a good rounded Suffolk farming family. Life was good, the weather from what I can remember was not too bad and the Christmas and birthday present were a whole lot better.

Then a strange thing happened; I grew up. I can’t remember the exact time I just recal no longer wanting to build a tree house but instead find a pub and order a pint. In fact come to think of it I believe it was about the time I started college in Colchester.

I spent a few years there on a ‘built environment’ course, quite cool really, spent a lot of time looking at and commenting on building and structures. After my brief tour of higher education I started working as a surveyor but found it somewhat of a bore so found a job as warehouseman at a local company.

Yep your as confused as I am right now, why am I driving a forklift for a living? Anyway I tried it, crashed it even wrote off a car so they put me in the office inputting data. Not really content I started nosing around and showing interest in a bit more of the logistics and a few months later I found myself as assistant to the transport manager.
A few months after that the transport manager departed himself so I was no longer an assistant. This job was one of the most demanding I’ve ever done; not in workload or complexity but purely in the dedication it took. The company ran 24/7 with deliveries going out 24/7 and only one person organising the deliveries and transport requirements, me, which meant I was working 24/7!

Not being the quitter my old English teacher thought I was I stuck at it for 2 years, working every hour god sent me until I realised it was my health at risk not just the delivery times. Biting the bullet I handed my notice in.
Two weeks later I was working as a IT Manger; at the same company. Turns out they did not want to lose me so offered me a job repairing computers and building networks. Having never done this before and my only computer experience being a PlayStation I was a little confused. None the less I got stuck in and started messing about. Soon I found myself really enjoying the scene and started messing about with strange new worlds; NT, Linux, Novell and the relentless dumb user!
Within a few months I was messing about with any device, language or technology I could find, trying to learn more. The company obviously saw the benefit and decided to actually train me on something, as Windows was the weapon of choice I studied for my MCSE.

Life was going well, but then suddenly out of the blue I was head hunted by another local company.
This company are a wholesaler of paper and polythene, the director was leaving to move back to Australia and being a small company they needed some one to fill a few shoes. It was a big decision, do I leave a good job in a large company to take on the unknown, oh by the way the new job meant working with my mum.
I took the plunge and started working for Oscar Products, three months later the company I left was bust and was bought out, closing the Sudbury site, lucky move!

Since then I have not looked back, only missing the IT scene every so often.

About The Site

shibbyonline was born a while back, first registered in about 2002 if I can remember correctly.
In the time that DNS servers have been pushing visitors through too the site it has taken many forms. To start with, when the first ideas of having a website popped into my head I only had a Windows98 PC and a copy of Serif PagePlus. (it hurts just to think back at the software and the headaches) needless to say I thought I would get a website and jump on the band wagon, why not there were hundreds of sites out there with nothing much to say. After thinking about it for a while I opted not to, it was a crap idea after all, but the thought never left me. One night a friend popped round with a bottle of Mezcal and a copy of a new film dude where’s my car.

Two hours later we were a bit blurry eyed and talking about the interweb thingie and how cool it would be to have a web site, so we ventured onto the PC and proceeded to look for domain names. Mental note; domain names should not be purchased while under the influence of any agave based spirit otherwise you end up with a strange website; shibbyonline was born!

Since then it has taken a few different faces, it started out as a place to mess about with creating html pages. Then it went onto hosting a few pictures and writing a few articles about kites and Operation Flashpoint. After that it went off line for a bit. Then I found the joys of Flash and as every one else was creating Flash based website I thought I would have a go.

This lasted a while but I was still not happy, until I got introduced to blogging and the WordPress platform.
I installed WordPress and a phpwiki site, trying to get the best of both worlds, in the end I dropped the phpwiki side to concentrate on the blogging.

Hobbies

I’m not all about the site, I do enjoy time elsewhere.
